ABOUT

English

Composer, bass player and vocalist Guro Skumsnes Moe is among the most active musicians and composers in Norway within the borderless music. With a primitive and direct approach she seeks for a physical sound through bass and voice. To search for a sound that is not possible. The instrumental approach has elements of friction and noise, and draw inspiration from concrete music, noise and performance. Moes background from improvised music through contemporary music and rock is remarkable and shows that the boundaries of today’s music is beginning to blur. Her production includes more than 20 albums, music to multiple productions by Plexus Polaires Compagnie (Moby Dick, which she won the Hedda price for in the category Audio visual performance), scoring for Amat Escalantes reward winning movie “The Untamed”, which she also was nominated for best score for the Ariel Price in Mexico, » and composing for her chamber orchestra The Touchables, and her world wide touring rock band MoE. Her cross disiplinary concert installation «Resonance Silence» led her to a residency stay at Headlands Center for the Arts, CA, and was shown to great critics at the Borealis Festival for experimental music, Norway in 2022.

Maria Bertel is a Danish trombone player, improviser and composer. The acoustic sound of her instrument amplified creates an output that draws inspiration from drone and noise music. What is normally not hearable is presenting itself, movements, metal and breath becomes a swirling part of her compositions. Changing organic patterns are emerging, tiny sounds becomes brutally clear as well as the range of overtones of the instrument.

She is one of five cofounders of the Copenhagen based art collective eget værelse founded in 2010. Apart from her work as a solo artist she performs an composes in groups like GESH (with drummer Jaleh Negari), Selvhenter, the notorious four piece noise rock band, G.E.K duo with saxophone player Johannes Lund, and more. She has presented her music in various festivals like Flow Festival (FL) Supersonic Festival (UK) Raw Power festival (UK) Sonic Protest (FR) Gong Tomorrow (DK) Borealis (NO) OFF festival B-sides festival (CH) Meteo festival (FR).

MEUF is both the name of a concert series and 2 album releases that emerged in 2023 as a new annual tradition where a compilation is released on Barefoot Records every year on March 8, with new collaborations between women and gender minorities, curated and initiated by composer and saxophonist Maria Dybbroe. The idea of MEUF is to spotlight some of the most interesting non-male musicians on the European scene for experimental music and improvisation, as well as to forge new bonds between non-male musicians in Europe, who due to their minority in the music industry may feel a lack of colleagues who, by virtue of their gender and minority status, are similar to themselves. With the album releases MEUF vol 1, 2 and 3, as well as several MEUF concerts in different countries and cities since 2023, over 50 women and gender minorities have already met in completely new constellations, which in several cases have become the start of long-term collaborations and for most of them have provided new experiences and new inspiration. Furthermore, the point is to inspire the audience, both young and older non-men, to become musicians, and to give the audience the opportunity to reflect on minority stories.
